The Challenge

Nestlé is responsible for maintaining millions of ice cream freezers leased to food providers such as gas stations, grocery stores, and other venues. When a store agrees to lease a freezer, the owner receives a payment discount on the condition that they place the freezer at the store’s front door. To ensure that Nestlé is gaining the promotion from freezers being in the right part of the store, field workers would visit each store to log the freezer’s location and condition. If a freezer needed to be replaced or repaired during the site visit, the field technician would report it to the warehouse and request a replacement or schedule a return with service parts.

This lack of asset visibility left the responsibility for reporting accuracy with hundreds of field representatives. Personnel was responsible for monitoring their assigned locations, equipment, and maintenance schedules. On top of the cost of potential reporting inaccuracies, freezer breakdowns were increasing, as was the cost of ownership; there was limited opportunity for practical preventive maintenance. With this lack of operational efficiency, setting and reaching operational goals was difficult.

The Solution
